Mike | Engine Driven Dry Air Pump

Intresting thing just happened. My attitude indicator started tumbling. Much to my dismay there was a small oil leak and the oil found it's way into the vains of the pump. Sooooooo.... one might want to put a blast tube & cover over the vain ports on the pump shaft to bring clean air from the top of the engine to the vains.

Just curious, the oil leak, from the engine or the back of the pump? (1) If it is from the back of the pump, you may have a Garloc seal issue, that does need to be addressed or it will damage another pump. (2)Do you have a vacuum pump or a pressure pump (Beech style, I believe), if pressure, then an engine oil leak can be sucked into the pump system, again, my .02 worth.

The blast tube you commonly see is for cooling of the pump, being aft of baffles, it gets hot and heat is one of the major contributors to a damaged air pump. Hank

Mike | Hummmmm

The oil leak was from one of the cly. head return lines. The air flow is such that it carried the oil to the pump. The pump is a rapco dry air pump. I have a blast tube there for cooling which actually ends up wrapping around the pump. I think it might have been in the wrong place. I have moved it very close to the pump intake so the oil, if any, will be blown away. The blast air is actually ram air which is cool air.
