Nothing much has been said about another Splash-in, so I thought I'd bring it up. Are there any ideas out there about when and where? Lets hear from the members and lets start putting some ideas together. Tom Saccio

Does anyone know about Sun & Fun where to stay... camp at the airport, seaplane area or other etc. or any other good to know tips?

i had a great time hosting the spash in last year here in maryland and would be happy to do it again. the mid september/after labor day is a good time frame for weather here in maryland. there are some nice discount airfares into balt for those from other areas ($59 southwest and airtran).

keithw | Response to Fred Lohr's Sept Invite

Hi Fred I would love to come to your area for a Sept. Splash In. I had a wonderful time last year. My only regret was that I didn't fly into your strip at the farm. Will this year and do some water work with the Bird. Lets see what the rest of the group has in mind. What about having something yet this spring, ---early summer. Even around Sun--Fun time?????? Keith Walljasper N80CC P. S. Two events would be GREAT.

We got a pretty good response from my posting about a Splash-in. So lets pick a place and a date. Lets hear some sugestions. Fred Lohr said that he wouldn't mind hosting it again. That's a start. I like the idea. If anyone has other opinions lets hear them. Tom Saccio

Tom Saccio | Splash-In

It's great that so many people responded favorably to a Splash-in in Sept or Oct. Now all we have to do is decide where. We need more input than "tell where and when and I'll be there." Lets try to come up with a viable place and time. We need imput from everyone. Tom Saccio

How about beautiful Lake Mead. In September the water is in the low 80's, you can see 20' deep and no critters. Fishing and boating are great and Sandy Point (located at the west end of the Grand Canyon) can accommodate dozens of seaplanes. Fuel is nearby as are some of the best accomadations in the world. We could even rent a LARGE houseboat to use as base of operations and, oh yes, did I mention, there's Las Vegas. Any interest?

I would be glad to host a Splash-in in Washington NC in September or October. Warren field (OCW) has 3 runways the town has some nice restaurants and enough hotels to accommodate all of us. We could use my hanger for a meeting place to holds all of our meetings. I live 25 minutes from town and about 30 minutes from Warren field. The nearest place to fly in commercially is either Greenville NC or New Bern. One could also fly in to Raleigh Durham, rent a car and drive. It's about a two and a half hour drive. Let me know what you all think about this idea. If we get enough response I will go a head with plans to finalize dates. Let me know what month is better.

It is possible if an airport is there to host the event.....although a bit far......for me.....

04-27-2009, 01:25 PM

Ok - Time for a poll

I will post the poll as soon as I confirm the following: (please let me know if ok to post)

1- JR's Lake Mead (need airport)

2- Fred's (W29) Baybridge Airport In Stevensville, Maryland

3- Tom's (OCW) Warren Field In Washington, North Carolina

Dates:

Sept: 18-19-20-21

25-26-27-28

Oct: 2-3-4-5

9-10-11-12

16-17-18-19

JR - Fred - Tom............Let me know whats good for you and I will post as a poll

04-27-2009, 07:05 PM

Fred Lohr

i can host this any of those weekends as right now those dates are all open, but the other options are great also. maybe we should have two events about six months apart, with one of them in a warm location. as far as i am concerned any excuse to hang around with seawind builders and flyers is great. For those of you thinking of hosting one of these in the future, it is really fun.... the people involved in this airplane are so great that all you need is an airport/ a hanger or tent to discuss things/ some motel rooms/ some provision for lunch/ and an event one evening.

AGENDA:

Does anyone have any ideas for the agenda...?

Once again, I would like to get some time to go over this forum....

05-03-2009, 05:55 PM

Tom Saccio | Splash-In

It looks like only about 4 people have voted on where and when to hold our Splash-in. I think that with that few people voting we won't be having a Splash-in. We need as many people as possible to vote. Mike the poll was a great idea. I hope it works. Tom Saccio

05-04-2009, 01:22 PM

Robehouse | Lake Mead

Howdy all. Here are the airport listings for Lake Mead area. Perkins (U08) is at the north end of the lake with a good runway and fuel. At the SE end of the lake we have Boulder City (61B), full service and very close to historic Boulder City. I’m based at North Las Vegas (VGT) and it’s a full service airport and I can make arrangements for shade hangars for anyone interested. Lastly there is Temple Bar (U30), no services except a shuttle to a very nice marina.

05-04-2009, 02:45 PM

Fred Lohr

I'm just thinking out loud here, but since there are two others interested in hosting this, and since I have already had the pleasure, It makes sense to me to have the fly in at one of the other locations either at Tom's in NC or out at leake meade and then I'll step up again next year. I do agree with Tom that you need a certain critical mass of participants to make it worthwhile.

05-04-2009, 05:19 PM

Mike

Tom & Fred.......

I suggested the poll to move things along......Actually 9 have voted so far.

Yep, you are right, you do need lots of people to make it a good time.

Sooooo what now? Do we start over again? Do you want me to re do the poll with the 2 best date(s) and which place(s)?

Personally, I would love to go to lake mead, however at 1,800+ miles, I am not going to be ready to do that this year. It is most likely the same issue for those out west. So what do we do...? Mabe 2 a year one east, one west??

This should be interesting when the certified's take to the air.......

05-04-2009, 05:55 PM

Tom Saccio | Splash-In

Personally I like To see Lake Meade also. Two Splash-in's a year sound great to me but we're having trouble getting people to vote in the poll. I think your idea of taking the best dates and the best places and starting the poll over is good. I also think that some people don't know how to navigate the site yet. If the poll could be more prominent so it is easier to find that might be better. However it works out either Lake Meade or Washington NC I'll go anyplace. Tom Saccio

05-05-2009, 05:10 PM

Mike

I will be re-posting the poll with 2 locations: North Carolina & Nevada

I will also be reposting the dates: Last week in sept. & first week in oct.

I would like to narrow down the lake meade info. Who would be hosting? Which airport did you want to use?

05-10-2009, 02:42 PM

Mike

Due to some issues with airports, meeting places, times........The Splash-In will be held in North Carolina this year.

Tom will be hosting this year......Take it away Tom......

05-10-2009, 04:28 PM

Tom Saccio | Splash-In 2009

It's official. The Splash-In will be in Washington North Carolina on Oct 2,3,4and 5th. There are many hotels in town and I will start getting rates and availability as soon as possible. Raleigh NC (RDU) is serviced by many airlines and it is about a 2hr and 15 min drive to Washington.

My home is on the Pamlico River at Maules Point. There is a ramp with good water access and plenty of space for parking planes if you come by water not so good otherwise. Warren field (OCW) in Washington has 3 nice runways and not much traffic.

If you want to get closer to Washington by commercial flight you could get a connecting flight into either Greenville NC (PGV) or New Bern NC (EWN). Both are about 30 minutes from Washington. All airports have rental car service.

More info to come in the near future. Hopefully many of you will attend.

Safe flying,

Tom Saccio | Splash-In 2009

I picked two hotels in Washington NC that I thought would fit our needs for the weekend of Oct 2nd. We could all stay in one Hotel or you could split up. Both hotels are nice, clean and inexpensive. Most rooms have refrig and Microwaves. All rooms have WiFi. Both come with Continental Breakfast.

First is the Comfort Inn. Our rate will be $60.00 / night plus tax. All of these rooms were just renovated last year and are clean and nice.

Second is the Days Inn. The rate is $49.95 / night plus tax. These rooms are also very nice and clean.

Both hotels are nice, my first choice would the Days Inn only because it is cheaper. It my seem a little early to be doing this but these hotels seem to book long in advance so the sooner we establish which hotel to go to , I will block some rooms.

It is imperative that I get a head count quickly so we could block some rooms. Please E-mail me with your intentions as soon as possible.

There are other Hotels in town so last minute deciders will be able to find a room. Albeit not with these rates.

You could call or E-mail at the numbers listed below or through the Web site

Tom Saccio | Splash-In 2009

Six hundred hits, Don't scare me like that. The site may have gotten six hundred but so far only a couple of people have committed. I would like to get as many committments as soon as possible so that I could lock down some rooms.

If anyone is even thinking of coming please let me know. I could always cancel rooms. Getting them at the last minute is more difficult.

As far as a rain date I hadn't thought about it. Trying to change the date at the last minute would be difficult for the people that are flying commercially and also for those that have taken time off. I any of you think that a rain date is a good idea let me know.

Oshkosh was a great trip. Next year we all should go out in our seawinds..!! This year I was next to the runway camping, next year I will be at the seaplane base.

I think you will have a few last minute stragglers. I for one usually can't plan that far ahead do to the business however, I must set priorities.

Nothing local at the airport for cars..? Maybe enterprise, they will usually deliver. I can look........I am trying to talk my other half into going.

If you need help, just yell. Yes, I will be flying my mistress down (Mrs Seawind) Hummmm, ramp at your place?? What’s the story? Is yours in the water yet? Have you ramped your plane?

08-14-2009, 01:51 PM

Tom Saccio | Splash-In

Hi Mike, I misunderstood you. I thought you meant car rentals at the big airports. You could get a car rental in town not far from Warren field. I will be at the airport on the friday before to pickup people. Anyone that needs a lift to town for any reason, getting to the hotel or the car rental places etc., I will take care of so don't worry about that. There will be enough cars around so you may not have to worry about transportation. Speak to you soon.

As for my plane it has been in the water as early as last week. The ramp is 20 feet wide and the water is plenty deep enough off shore. Drop you wheels about 200feet of and taxi till the wheels touch. The rest is easy.

Larry Brunzlick | Hoping to attend the splash in

Hi Tom,

I would like to get a little more information about the splash-in. I had been hoping to make it, until I discovered a little glitch. I put in my requests for time off plenty early. Sharon likes to attend these events and so my plan was that we would take our daughter out of school on Friday and fly out there either Thursday after school or early Friday morning. Well I forgot to check the school schedule. Turns out, it's homecoming and my daughter has to march in her middle school band in the homecoming parade Friday afternoon. It's part of her grade with serious consequences for not attending.

I'm wondering if you have a tentative agenda yet, or if you could at least give me a loose idea of what you have planned for Saturday and Sunday. With two instrument rated pilots and barring any severe weather, we could still leave about 6 PM EST on Friday and with one stop for fuel, get there a little after midnight. I'm not going to make a commitment until it gets a little closer and I know what the weather is doing. For that reason, I haven't made any reservations yet. I'm hoping that there is either taxi service or the motel could provide shuttle service.

We would have to leave by four or 5 PM on Sunday.

Am I correct in understanding that the get-togethers and tire kicking is going to be at your house or is there going to be something planned at your local airport? Meals?

What's the name of the local car rental there in Washington? Phone?

Hope to see you in 17 days.

Hi Larry, Glad to hear that you're trying to make the Splash-in. At that time of night there is no one at the airport or at the car rental agency. If you decide to come I will pick you up and take you to the motel. I'm not far from the airport. Most of the activities will be at my home starting around 12 noon on Saturday. Next week I will publish a game plan of activities. The Car rental agency is Enterprise and there number is 252 975-1995. Let me know what you decide to do and I will try to accomodate you. Say hello to Sharron. Tom Saccio

Other than Jack Ardoyno, I don't think any of you know me. I am an aspiring member of your Seawind fraternity, trapped in a Turbo Arrow. From your notes, I can sense that a good number of you are looking forward to the SI planned for Warren in October. Enjoy!

I have mentioned to Jack that I may have an ideal arrangement that would nicely lend itself to a Splash In for 2010. We own a lake home on Shell Lake, WI. The tarmac for the municpal airport is 100 yards from our front door, with a brand new (3700') paved runway. Our lake home can comfortably sleep up to 17 souls, with 4 rooms accommodating husbands and wives. I would offer our home - for free . . . .

Seawind pilots would have the lake available all day long for water work, etc., and the safety of new pavement and tie downs to secure their aircraft at night.

The local flying club and city administrator are in favor of helping assist us.

Why don't you lads discuss this at your SI in Warren and then let me or Jack know your thoughts.

Tom Saccio | Splash-in 2009

We are now about a week away from Splash-in 2009. It seems that we are going to have a good crowd and possibly about 5 Seawinds. This may be the largest gathering of Seawinds ever assembled in one place.

The program is shaping up well so I will give you a breakdown of the events.

(1) Keith Walljasper will speak about regaining his medical. This will be of

interest to most of us sooner then we care to admit.

(2) Jack Ardoyno will speak about Seawind flying and some

other ontroversial topics. As usual much discussion will follow.

(3)Mike Witkowsky will discuss the Web site in debth. There has been

much discussion about this issue in the past. Maybe we could finally

put it to rest.

(4) Ed Lynch will speak about an incident he recently had with his Seawind

as well as formation flying.

(5) John and Chris from PlaneMakers will speak about some new things

that are going on there as well as the projects they are involved in.

If anyone else has something to contribute you are certainly welcome to speak up.

On Friday afternoon Sandy and I will be available to pick people up at

New Bern airport or at Warren field and transport them to the hotel. On Friday evening we will gather at the hotel and meet for dinner at a local restaurant in town.

Saturday we will be at the hotel about 8:30 AM. We will go to the airport pickup late arrivals and transport you all to my home where the meeting will be held. Dinner will be at My home on Saturday evening.

I expect at least 4 Seawinds to be landing at my home at Maules Point. There is plenty of room for the planes on land at my home. Those of you who don't want to go there will be able to keep your plane at Warren Field.

Sunday will be more of the same. We will continue with any unfinished business at that time.

Please don't hesitate to call me with any questions or concerns. Sandy and I will try to accommodate you any way we can. Below are a list of my numbers.

Those of you that are flying in in your Seawinds and plan on landing on the river at my home, please let me know your approximate time of arrival. Also keep your radios tuned to 122.7 the OCW frequency and I will monitor that frequency. There is plenty of room and a good ramp to get your planes out of the water. Try to call in advance as to you ETA so that I will be there to help.

Those landing at OCW should also call so that we could pick you up and take you to the motel.

Fly safe

Sandy and I would like to thank everyone for attending the Splash-In and making it the success it was. I hope that everyone that attended had as good a time as we did.

There were 5 Seawinds on the lawn at my home. That's the most gathered in a long time.

The seawind splash in was a huge success thanks to Tom and Sandy Saccio. What a splendid day and perfect location. Being able to taxi right in to the water and having fly bys right there was just great. I can't say enough about the good food and hospitality provide by our hosts. Not many people have ever had 5 seawinds parked on their lawns.

All i can say is thanks and look forward to next year.

Tom and Sandy, thank you for hosting a fabulous Splash-in. The setting, the weather, the companionship and the food were outstanding, not to mention the 5 beautiful Seawinds. My son-in-law Mike and I had a great time. This Splash-in will be a tough one to beat.

Sandy and Tom,

What a fantastic Splashin thanks to all your hard work. Your outstanding hospitality made every one feel special and welcome. Thanks to your wonderful friends, Richard and Jan, special people. This was the best yet.

Five beautiful Seawinds on your lawn; and probably room for five more. Maybe next year.
